Akinola breaks Irish 60m record in Belgrade
The sprinter ran 6.54 for second place at the Serbian indoor meeting.
Source publication date:
Bori Akinola improved the Irish indoor 60m record to 6.54 in Belgrade, finishing second behind Hungary’s Dominik Illovszky, who ran 6.52. The performance cut three hundredths from Israel Olatunde’s national mark established in 2023.
The 24-year-old had already lowered his personal best to 6.59 in Glasgow less than two weeks earlier. His Belgrade result followed multiple false-start recalls, requiring the field to reset before the decisive race.
Athletics Ireland stated that the new record was subject to ratification. Akinola had already achieved the qualifying standard for the World Indoor Championships before this race, and the further improvement strengthened his standing at the front of Irish sprinting during the indoor season.
