Alpini team supports Olympic sliding operations
Thirty Italian mountain infantry personnel worked at the Cortina Sliding Centre.
Source publication date:
Thirty members of Italy’s Alpini mountain infantry supported operations at the Cortina Sliding Centre during Milano Cortina. Their duties included controlling access to the track and start areas, as well as helping secure sleds at the finish.
Lieutenant Davide Dallaogo said the unit initially had no experience of sliding sports. Its members received a full day of instruction before official training began, learning the procedures needed to assist luge, bobsleigh and skeleton competitions safely.
The soldiers also worked as catchers in the finishing area, where sleds require controlled handling after their runs. FIL’s account documented a practical contribution to venue operations, alongside the wider volunteer and staff work that enabled the Olympic sliding programme to take place.
