Andreescu ends eight-month WTA main-draw wait in Charleston
The Canadian recovered from a set down against Dalma Galfi.
Source publication date:
Bianca Andreescu defeated Dalma Galfi 1–6, 6–4, 6–1 in Charleston for her first WTA main-draw victory since July. The former US Open champion ended a five-match losing streak at tour level and reversed her defeat to the Hungarian in Austin five weeks earlier.
Galfi saved the first eleven break points she faced before Andreescu finally broke at 4–3 in the second set. The Canadian then captured four of her opponent’s final five service games and conceded only four points on serve in the deciding set.
Andreescu had rebuilt match fitness by playing lower-level tournaments, winning two Florida ITF titles in January and reaching the Austin WTA 125 final. Her Charleston victory set up a second-round meeting with Sofia Kenin, another former Grand Slam singles champion.
