Mirra Andreeva defeated McCartney Kessler 6–1, 6–7(3), 6–1 to reach the Miami Open third round. The eighteen-year-old closed the contest in the early hours after Kessler forced a deciding set, reversing a straight-sets defeat to the American in Montreal the previous season.

Andreeva won the opening set in twenty-one minutes, but Kessler broke early in the second and later controlled its tiebreak. The teenager responded after losing the first game of the decider, winning six consecutive games to complete the victory.

Andreeva produced twenty-four winners against twenty-one unforced errors, while Kessler’s thirty-six errors offset her twenty-five winners. Their professional rivalry became level at one victory each. Andreeva moved on to face Marie Bouzkova, whom she had beaten in all three previous meetings.
