Source publication date:
Iliass Aouani set an Italian marathon record of 2:04:26 in Tokyo, finishing sixth in the men’s race. The time cut fifty-eight seconds from Yohanes Chiappinelli’s national mark and improved Aouani’s own previous best by one minute and forty seconds.
Aouani passed halfway in 1:02:01 and thirty kilometres in 1:28:02 before the leading group accelerated late in the race. He reported calf cramps over the final five kilometres but maintained enough pace to secure the record.
Tadese Takele won in 2:03:37, one second ahead of Geoffrey Toroitich and Alexander Mutiso. Brigid Kosgei took the women’s title in 2:14:29. Aouani’s performance moved him seventh on Europe’s all-time marathon list.
