Archbold clears seven metres as juvenile indoor records fall

Athlone’s opening championship weekend brought sprint, middle-distance and jump milestones.

John Paul Archbold led a weekend of championship records at Ireland’s National Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone. The Newbridge athlete jumped 7.02 metres, breaking a long-standing long-jump mark and becoming the first competitor to exceed seven metres at that level.

Darragh Whelan ran an under-sixteen 800-metre record of 1:57.67, while Lukas Janosik set an under-thirteen 600-metre best of 1:33.88. Christopher Olatunde recorded 21.58 in the under-eighteen 200 metres and also won his age group’s sixty-metre title.

Tiffany Nwaedozie collected three golds in the under-eighteen sprints and long jump. Molly Daly won the under-nineteen 400 metres in 54.25, narrowly ahead of Erin Friel’s 54.29. The final championship day is scheduled for 11 April.
