Charlotte Bankes and Matt Weston were selected to carry Great Britain’s flag at the Milano Cortina closing ceremony in Verona. The announcement followed Bankes’s mixed snowboard cross victory with Huw Nightingale and Weston’s two gold medals in individual and mixed skeleton.

Weston became the first British athlete to win two golds at one Winter Olympics. Bankes and Nightingale had earned Britain’s first Olympic gold on snow after an injury-disrupted preparation, providing the sporting achievements recognised by the selection.

Chef de mission Eve Muirhead described both athletes as ambassadors for the wider British team. The ceremony at Verona’s Roman amphitheatre offered the pair a shared leadership role after competing in separate Olympic clusters, bringing their teammates together at the end of the Games.
