Australian basketball figures and celebrities were announced for the first Legends of Basketball Game for Bowel Cancer on 28 February. The State Basketball Centre event aimed to raise awareness and funds for the Gibbs Lab at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.
More than 30 participants included Andrew Gaze, Michele Timms, Cal Bruton, Phil Smyth, Mark Bradtke and David Andersen. Founder Nigel Purchase said organisers hoped to establish an annual event bringing the sport’s community together around the research cause.
The programme included a meet-and-greet, celebrity shootout and legends game. At the announcement, organisers reported more than $140,000 raised and nearly 2300 tickets sold. Donations and event proceeds were designated to support the laboratory’s work on bowel cancer research and early detection.
