Source publication date:
Wales' World Cup qualifying campaign ended after Bosnia and Herzegovina won a penalty shoot-out 4-2 in Cardiff. The play-off semi-final finished 1-1 after extra time, with Dan James putting the hosts ahead before Edin Dzeko's late header brought the visitors back into contention.
James scored from distance six minutes into the second half after Harry Wilson had struck the crossbar before the interval. Karl Darlow denied Ermedin Demirovic as Wales protected its lead, but Dzeko equalised from a corner in the eighty-sixth minute.
Darlow saved Demirovic's opening shoot-out attempt, only for Brennan Johnson to miss and Neco Williams to have his penalty stopped by Nikola Vasilj. Kerim Alajbegovic converted the decisive kick, sending Bosnia and Herzegovina into the final and leaving Wales to face Northern Ireland in a friendly.
