Botn wins Olympic individual biathlon on debut
The Norwegian hit all twenty targets to beat Eric Perrot and Sturla Holm Lægreid.
Source publication date:
Johan-Olav Botn won the Olympic men’s twenty-kilometre individual biathlon in Antholz, completing the race in 51:35.5 without a shooting penalty. France’s Eric Perrot took silver, 14.8 seconds behind, and Norway’s Sturla Holm Lægreid earned bronze, 48.3 seconds back.
Perrot led early but missed a target in the first standing stage. Botn moved ahead during the second prone visit, then maintained his advantage despite Perrot’s fast, accurate final standing shoot. Both silver and bronze medallists finished with one penalty.
Finland’s Olli Hiidensalo also hit every target and finished fourth. Botn became the second male biathlete to win Olympic gold in his first Olympic race, following Vincent Jay’s sprint victory at Vancouver 2010.
