British Judo adopts updated contest rules from 21 February
The English Open begins domestic implementation of the revised international framework.
Source publication date:
British Judo confirmed adoption of the International Judo Federation’s 2026 contest rules at domestic events from 21 February, beginning with the English Open. The update clarifies scoring and penalties following the broader changes introduced after the previous Olympic cycle.
Single-buttock and side landings can now score yuko, while grip-breaking rules distinguish between releases that retain a grip and two-handed breaks that leave none. Time-wasting procedures introduce an initial warning, with more restrained application at lower-level domestic events.
British adaptations also require withdrawal after unconsciousness at any level and revise several age-specific technique restrictions. Updated rulebooks were published, and referees were instructed to provide briefings at the start of competition days, with further training planned through national and regional courses.
