Brock Nelson leads the United States past Latvia in Olympic opener
Two American power-play goals helped settle the group C contest.

The United States opened its Olympic men’s hockey campaign with a 5–1 victory over Latvia. Brock Nelson scored twice as the Americans took control through three unanswered goals during the second period, following a competitive start to the group C game.
Auston Matthews, Brady Tkachuk and Tage Thompson supplied the other American goals. Jack Hughes, Quinn Hughes, Jack Eichel and Matthew Tkachuk each provided two assists. Latvia’s only reply came from Renars Krastenbergs as the United States finished with a 38–18 shot advantage.
The Americans scored twice on the power play and overcame two apparent opening-period goals being overturned after video review. Nelson welcomed a productive Olympic debut, while the result gave Mike Sullivan’s team an early platform for its campaign with an NHL-based squad.
