John Brown III won the Damian Martin Trophy as the NBL’s best defensive player in his first season with South East Melbourne. The forward received 75 votes at the league’s awards evening, comfortably ahead of Will Magnay and Kristian Doolittle.

Brown averaged two steals per game, sharing the competition lead with Brisbane’s Casey Prather. His defensive performances brought recognition at the ceremony held at Crown Casino, adding another individual honour to a career spanning several professional leagues.

His previous achievements included French league defensive recognition in 2024, leading EuroLeague steals in 2022 and the VTB defensive player award in 2021. The Phoenix subsequently prepared for the March seeding qualifier against Perth, opening its pursuit of an NBL championship.
