Choi wins Olympic snowboard halfpipe after early crash

Gaon Choi won Olympic women’s snowboard halfpipe gold in Livigno after a heavy opening-run crash. The seventeen-year-old recovered to produce a final score of 90.25 points, overtaking Chloe Kim’s 88-point opening run.
Choi rode out of the pipe and received medical attention after her first fall, then fell again on her second attempt. Her final run combined five landed tricks, including switch and regular nines, to move into first place with five riders still to compete.
Kim fell while attempting to improve her score on the last run and took silver after winning the previous two Olympic titles. Choi became the first Korean snowboard Olympic champion, while Kim earned a third medal in three consecutive Games.
