Cyprus formally opens the Candidates tournaments
Sixteen contenders appeared at a ceremony combining official welcomes, music and fireworks.

The FIDE Candidates and Women’s Candidates tournaments were officially opened in Cyprus before competitive play began. All sixteen contenders appeared on stage at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort, following a photo session and an informal meeting with journalists and guests.
Cyprus tourism minister Kostas Koumis and national federation president Criton Tornaritis welcomed the events. FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich thanked the government, local institutions and tournament partners for providing the playing conditions and supporting the championship programme.
Greek singer Thomai Apergi performed with piano and saxophone before fireworks accompanied the formal declaration. The first round was scheduled for 29 March at 15:30 local time, with grandmasters Peter Svidler and Jan Gustafsson providing commentary for the federation’s live broadcast.
