Czechia shut out Finland for their first Olympic women’s victory
Klara Peslarova made twenty-five saves as Finland’s scoring difficulties continued.
Source publication date:
Czechia defeated Finland 2–0 to secure its first victory in Olympic women’s hockey group A. Klara Peslarova stopped all twenty-five shots, with strong defending in front of her helping the Czechs recover from a shootout defeat in their opening match.
It was the first Olympic meeting between the women’s teams and the first time a European opponent had shut out Finland at the Games. Finland had also been kept scoreless by the United States, leaving the team without a goal from two tournament appearances.
Czech players regarded the result as an important confirmation that they could compete successfully in the stronger preliminary group. Finland identified blocked attempts, missed power-play chances and insufficient communication as problems to resolve, with the inability to finish opportunities preventing a response in Milan.
