Dota Arai takes Paris under-100kg gold
A foot sweep in golden score settled the Japanese judoka’s final against Anton Savytskiy.
Source publication date:
Japan’s Dota Arai won the men’s under-100kg title at the Paris Grand Slam by defeating Anton Savytskiy of Ukraine. Neither athlete received a score or penalty during regulation time, and their attacking final required golden score to determine the champion.
After almost six minutes of total fighting time, Arai caught Savytskiy as the Ukrainian came out of his own attack. A de-ashi-harai settled the contest and gave Arai the gold medal following an evenly contested afternoon in the Accor Arena.
Niiaz Bilalov earned bronze against Gennaro Pirelli through a five-second hold during golden score. Kazakhstan’s Nurlykhan Sharkhan won the other bronze match against Simeon Catharina, scoring waza-ari with a seoi-otoshi in extra time. Pirelli and Catharina therefore finished fifth in the category.
