Eala advances at Indian Wells as Gauff retires with arm injury
The Filipino player led by a set and two games when play ended.
Source publication date:
Alexandra Eala reached the Indian Wells fourth round when Coco Gauff retired with a left-arm injury. Eala led 6–2, 2–0 after fifty-four minutes, becoming the first Filipino player to reach the tournament’s last sixteen following a disrupted third-round contest.
Gauff took a medical timeout while trailing 5–2 in the opener and received heavy forearm taping during the set break. After losing the first two games of the second set, she could not continue, recording only her second career match retirement.
Eala acknowledged International Women’s Day in her on-court remarks and wished Gauff a quick recovery. The result levelled their professional rivalry at one win each after Dubai and sent Eala into a first meeting with Linda Noskova, who had beaten Sorana Cirstea.
