Eala reaches first Dubai quarterfinal
The Filipino defeated Sorana Cirstea and earned a first tour-level meeting with Coco Gauff.
Source publication date:
Alexandra Eala reached her first Dubai quarterfinal by defeating Sorana Cirstea 7–5, 6–4 in one hour and thirty-eight minutes. The twenty-year-old became the first Filipino to reach that stage at the tournament and advanced to her second WTA 1000 quarterfinal.
A break at 5–5 in the opening set gave Eala the opportunity to serve it out. She then built a 4–0 lead in the second set, with repeated pressure on Cirstea’s second serve helping her establish control.
Cirstea won three consecutive games from 5–1 down, but Eala held to love to finish. The victory ended the Romanian’s seven-match winning streak and set up Eala’s first tour-level match against Coco Gauff.
