Jílek took silver while Lorello earned a home-city bronze in Milan.
Source publication date:
Sander Eitrem won the Olympic men’s five thousand metres in 6:03.95, setting a record after recovering from a stumble at the start. Metoděj Jílek took silver, 2.53 seconds behind, and Milan-born Riccardo Lorello earned bronze in front of his home crowd.
Eitrem entered the Games after setting a world record below six minutes in Inzell. Once settled into the Olympic race, he kept every full lap below twenty-nine seconds until the last, finishing ahead of Jílek in their shared pairing.
Lorello’s podium came at his first Olympics and placed him ahead of fellow Italian Davide Ghiotto, who missed bronze by 0.35 seconds. Eitrem described relief after managing the pressure created by his world record and status among the pre-race favourites.
