Hania El Hammamy defended the Optasia Championships women’s title with a 3–0 victory over Nour ElSherbini. She won 11–9, 12–10, 11–6 in thirty-nine minutes at Wimbledon, retaining the world number one ranking that had been at stake in the final.
El Hammamy began with a 9–3 lead before closing the first game despite ElSherbini’s recovery. The second was tighter: ElSherbini reached game ball at 10–9, but El Hammamy won the next three points to establish a two-game advantage in the title match.
The champion moved from 6–5 to 10–6 in the third before an ElSherbini volley went out of court. El Hammamy said she was proud of maintaining her composure in a match that could have cost her the leading ranking position against the eight-time world champion.
