Elkabbani removes top seed as Malaysian players upset Indian Open hosts
The second-round results opened the men’s draw at the Cricket Club of India.
Source publication date:
Ibrahim Elkabbani defeated top seed Yahya Elnawasany 4–11, 11–8, 12–10, 6–11, 11–9 in the JSW Indian Open second round. The sixty-six-minute Mumbai upset extended the Egyptian’s improving form after a recent title on his national federation’s tournament circuit.
Malaysian players Duncan Lee and Ameeshenraj Chandaran also advanced against seeded Indian opponents. Lee beat Ramit Tandon in straight games, while Chandaran defeated Velavan Senthilkumar 3–0, recovering from 7–1 down in the third to finish without needing another game.
Tanvi Khanna upset seventh seed Nour Khafagy 11–5, 11–9, 11–9 in the women’s draw. Anahat Singh, Joshna Chinappa, Abhay Singh and Veer Chotrani also progressed, but the late Malaysian wins prevented an entirely successful evening for the tournament’s home players.
