The seventh seed overturned five previous defeats against the Mexican player.
Source publication date:
Yahya Elnawasany defeated Leonel Cardenas 8–11, 11–6, 11–6, 11–4 to reach the Canadian Men’s Open final. The eighty-six-minute semifinal delivered the Egyptian’s first victory in six professional meetings with Cardenas and extended his run of upsets in Calgary.
The third-seeded Mexican took a twenty-five-minute opening game. Elnawasany responded with seven consecutive points during the second and maintained his attacking pressure through the remaining games, reversing a head-to-head record that had previously favoured Cardenas in every meeting.
Ranked twenty-fifth in the world, the seventh seed overcame the world number fourteen to secure a second consecutive tournament final. He had recently won the McMillan Goodfellow Classic and now faced Victor Crouin in another championship match after an especially demanding Canadian campaign.
