Emma and Harriet McRae described how judo connects their family through training, competition and coaching. Harriet began as a young child and later competed internationally, while Emma started at thirty-eight partly to provide another female training partner during her daughter’s teenage years.

Harriet, now twenty-one and a first Dan, won bronze at the 2024 Birmingham Junior European Cup before moving into an apprenticeship. Emma, forty-seven and a first Kyu, continues coaching, volunteering and supporting event welfare alongside full-time employment and endurance-running challenges.

The pair completed coaching qualifications together and now help younger judoka at The Judo Company. Other family members contribute through club leadership and timekeeping, illustrating how a competitive pathway can develop into long-term involvement even as work and other commitments change.
