Source publication date:
England Athletics announced the death of Mary Rand and celebrated her place in British athletics history. Rand won Olympic long-jump gold in Tokyo in 1964 with a world record of 6.76 metres, becoming Britain’s first female Olympic athletics champion.
At the same Games she took pentathlon silver and helped the sprint relay team win bronze. Her international record also included Commonwealth long-jump gold in 1966 and European bronze in 1962, alongside world indoor and relay records.
Rand was inducted into the federation’s Hall of Fame in 2009, with Jean Pickering accepting the award on her behalf. England Athletics presented the trophy personally during a 2012 visit, and chief executive Chris Jones recognised her influence on subsequent generations.
