Epis withdraws as Tesfay makes spectacular Barcelona debut
A calf problem ended the Italian’s marathon return at thirty-one kilometres.

Giovanna Epis withdrew from the Barcelona Marathon at thirty-one kilometres with a calf problem. The Italian had passed halfway in 1:12:53 and remained near her planned pace through twenty-five kilometres before slowing and stopping on her return to the distance.
Fotyen Tesfay won the women’s race in 2:10:51 on her marathon debut, moving second on the all-time list reported by FIDAL. Joan Jepkosgei Kiplimo finished second in 2:18:40 and Zeineba Yimer third in 2:18:47.
Abel Chelangat won the men’s race in 2:04:56, three seconds ahead of Patrick Kabirech Mosin, with Jonathan Samanayo Korir third. Italy’s René Cunéaz placed nineteenth in 2:15:06, while Xavier Chevrier stopped after twenty-five kilometres.
