Etheridge saves twice as Buriram win the shootout
A 4-2 penalty victory secured Buriram’s second consecutive Elite quarter-final.
Source publication date:
Buriram United advanced to the AFC Champions League Elite quarter-finals by defeating Melbourne City 4-2 on penalties. Neil Etheridge saved two spot-kicks after the second leg ended goalless through extra time, leaving the tie level at 1-1 on aggregate.
Buriram played most of the match with ten men after Robert Zulj was dismissed for violent conduct. Melbourne failed to convert the advantage, with a Nathaniel Atkinson goal ruled out for offside and Etheridge making important saves late in normal time.
City also lost a player when German Ferreyra received a red card near the end of extra time. Etheridge then denied Ryan Teague and Aziz Behich in the shootout before Kenneth Dougall’s successful penalty confirmed Buriram’s second consecutive quarter-final appearance.
