FAW expands its grassroots season-format pilots
Project Chwarae opened two further testing phases after four leagues joined the initial programme.
Source publication date:
The Football Association of Wales expanded Project Chwarae, its review of grassroots scheduling, by opening two additional pilot phases. Four leagues had already joined the first phase for under-six to under-ten football, testing a March-to-November season with a planned summer break.
Phase Two would examine an August-to-summer cycle across youth and adult grassroots age groups. Phase Three would trial a spring-to-autumn calendar in 2027 for selected age groups. Men's tiers one to three and women's tiers one and two were excluded from both new phases.
The project responds to weather-related postponements and broader questions about participation, enjoyment and sustainability. National data, a community survey and stakeholder meetings informed the trials. Online workshops were arranged to explain the formats, applications and support available to leagues considering participation.
