FIDE marks Vladimir Tukmakov’s eightieth birthday
The grandmaster’s playing record and coaching achievements span major international team titles.

Vladimir Tukmakov turned eighty on 5 March, with FIDE celebrating his career as a grandmaster, author and coach. Born in Odessa in 1946, he earned the grandmaster title in 1972 after establishing himself among the leading Soviet players.
Tukmakov won team gold in his only Chess Olympiad appearance in 1984. He also collected three team and two individual gold medals across the 1973, 1983 and 1989 European Team Championships, alongside multiple victories in international tournaments.
After moving into coaching, he led Ukraine to Olympiad gold in 2004 and 2010. FIDE named him Trainer of the Year in 2010 and honoured him again during its centenary celebrations in 2024; his pupils included Anish Giri and Wesley So.
