FIDE permits selected shorter games to earn standard ratings
Approved major events can use forty-five minutes plus a thirty-second increment under safeguards.
Source publication date:
FIDE’s Council approved a 2026 pilot allowing selected shorter time controls to count for standard ratings and title norms. Eligible major or traditional events can use forty-five minutes plus a thirty-second increment, or longer controls such as sixty minutes plus thirty seconds.
The change requires case-by-case approval from the Qualification Commission. Organisers must submit applications for assessment of field strength, event history and federation support. The federation linked the adjustment to shorter event schedules and reduced travel and accommodation commitments.
Safeguards limit approved tournaments to two rounds per day and allow only one norm from such events toward a single title. The commission will monitor implementation during the year and can revise its criteria as evidence from the continuing pilot develops.
