Finland shut out Italy to finish second in Olympic group B
An eleven-goal victory completed the Finns’ preliminary campaign.
Source publication date:
Finland defeated hosts Italy 11–0 to finish second in Olympic men’s hockey group B. Slovakia, Finland and Sweden each ended with six points, with the order determined by goal difference in their head-to-head games rather than this final margin against Italy.
Kaapo Kakko scored twice and added an assist. Mikael Granlund, Sebastian Aho and Joel Kiviranta also scored twice, while Artturi Lehkonen contributed a goal and two assists. Finland outshot Italy 62–15, scored twice on the power play and took no penalties.
Juuse Saros registered his first Olympic shutout. Italy used both goalkeepers and could not reproduce the resistance shown in its earlier narrow defeat by Slovakia. The Finnish win completed a recovery from their opening loss and kept their title defence moving into the knockout phase.
