Furlani matches personal best for world indoor silver
A last-round jump by Gerson Balde decides the men’s long jump title in Torun.

Mattia Furlani equalled his personal best of 8.39m to win silver at the World Indoor Championships. The defending champion took the lead in round five before Portugal’s Gerson Balde jumped 8.46m on his final attempt to claim gold.
Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Saraboyukov, who had led with 8.31m, finished with bronze. Furlani’s silver was his seventh consecutive international championship podium and his fourth World Championships medal, following two golds in 2025 and indoor silver in 2024.
The result completed Italy’s best world indoor medal tally: three golds and two silvers, good for third in the medal table. Elsewhere in the final session, Sveva Gerevini placed seventh in the pentathlon with 4,522 points and Federico Riva seventh in the 1,500m in 3:40.98.
