Germany defeat Japan for their first Olympic women’s hockey win
Laura Kluge’s four points helped establish a decisive opening period.
Source publication date:
Germany defeated Japan 5–2 to record its first victory of the Olympic women’s hockey tournament. Three goals during the opening period forced a Japanese goalkeeper change and gave Germany the advantage after a disappointing defeat by Sweden in its first game.
Laura Kluge contributed a goal and three assists. Nicole Hadraschek scored twice and assisted once, while Daria Gleissner and Emily Nix each added a goal and an assist. Sandra Abstreiter made twenty saves to secure her first Olympic win.
Mei Miura registered a goal and an assist for Japan, with Yumeka Wajima supplying the other reply. Japanese players acknowledged a stronger response during the later periods but said the early concession had disrupted the game, leaving the team with one win from two group B appearances.
