Girls Squad expands from schools into athletics clubs
A six-week programme targets teenage participation and support for coaches.
Source publication date:
Athletics Ireland launched Girls Squad Clubs to help affiliated clubs retain teenage girls and recruit new participants. The programme builds on its schools initiative and follows the HERMoves approach, including girls who prefer participation activities rather than formal competition.
Digital coaching resources provide six weeks of inclusive track-and-field sessions and games. The first five hundred girls receive programme shirts, while the first twenty coaches signing up receive coaching hoodies. Club coaching leads are encouraged to organise delivery.
The support package includes an online Coaching Teenage Girls workshop on 17 April and a Talking Periods webinar with Orna Murray. Clubs must register by 27 March, with the federation’s women-in-sport lead Anna Grealish handling enquiries about the initiative.
