Girona beat Barcelona to change the La Liga lead
A late home winner settled the Catalan derby after Cubarsi’s opener.
Source publication date:
Girona defeated Barcelona 2-1 at Montilivi in a Catalan derby that cost the visitors first place in La Liga. Barcelona took the lead through Pau Cubarsi but could not protect it, with Girona equalising quickly and eventually finding a late winner.
Both teams wasted opportunities during the first half. Lamine Yamal struck the post with a penalty after Dani Olmo was fouled, while returning winger Raphinha also hit the woodwork. Girona’s counter-attacks repeatedly required Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia to remain alert during the contest.
Cubarsi’s header finally broke the deadlock after the interval, but the advantage was short-lived. Girona’s winning goal arrived with four minutes of normal time remaining, and Barcelona could not find a response before the final whistle.
