Greece defeated the Faroe Islands women 2-0 in their opening qualifier for the 2027 World Cup. Veatriki Sarri converted a penalty in the second minute at Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium in Crete, giving the hosts an early lead in the group encounter.
The Greek team controlled much of the first half, while the Faroese side struggled to create sustained attacking play. After the interval the visitors moved further forward and produced promising situations, but they could not convert their improved spell into an equaliser.
Sofia Kongouli added Greece’s second goal in the 78th minute to establish the final margin. The Faroese federation confirmed that the teams’ next meeting would be the return qualifier at Tórsvøllur on 14 April, bringing Greece to the islands for the following window.
