Haaland invests in Norway Chess’s combined world tour
A pilot is planned for autumn before a four-event championship season in 2027.
Source publication date:
Erling Haaland joined Norwegian businessman Morten Borge in establishing Chess Mates, a significant investor in Norway Chess. Their involvement supports the proposed Total Chess World Championship Tour, which combines Fast Classic, rapid and blitz chess to determine an overall champion.
The tour is designed around four tournaments in four cities each year. FIDE has approved the new championship for at least sixteen years. A pilot event is planned for autumn 2026, with the full championship season beginning in 2027.
Organisers announced a minimum annual prize pool of $2.7 million. Fast Classic uses a shorter classical time limit, down to forty-five minutes with a thirty-second increment, and is intended to count towards classical ratings.
