Hangzhou canal event brings together more than 500 paddlers
Open and masters divisions linked participation sport with the historic Grand Canal.
Source publication date:
More than 500 athletes from 30 Chinese provinces took part in Hangzhou’s Grand Canal Canoe Marathon Series stop and second Mass Canoeing Open on 6–7 June. Competitors ranged from 15 to 65 years old, spanning grassroots participants and experienced paddlers.
The programme featured ten-kilometre canoe ocean racing and stand-up paddling in open and masters divisions. Racing used central canal waters between landmarks including Wulinmen Pier and Gongchen Bridge, connecting competitive activity with the city’s historic waterfront.
Organisers also offered guided paddling experiences for residents and tourists, with professional instruction and safety support. The ICF’s Hangzhou representative office supported the event. The federation’s 11 June account documented participation and delivery rather than supplying individual winners, so no podium results are inferred. The event illustrates how national mass-participation competitions can extend access beyond elite racing.
