IIHF details situation room's video review and player safety work
The March feature explained how travelling technology supported officials and medical teams at the Milan Olympics.
Source publication date:
The IIHF outlined the work of its travelling situation room in a March feature on Olympic officiating. Led by Mike Hicks, the unit reviewed goals, potential coach challenges and player safety incidents while communicating with officials and medical staff.
At the Milan Games, operators could access 36 camera angles. The system supported reviews involving offside, missed attacking zone stoppages, goalkeeper interference and puck over the glass penalties, with teams given a 45 second window to challenge after a goal.
The on-ice referees retained the final decision. Operators also preserved incident footage for medical assessments and possible disciplinary review, working alongside NHL player safety expertise. After the Olympics, the travelling unit's next assignments included the men's under-18 championship in Slovakia and senior worlds in Switzerland.
