Source publication date:
Athletics Ireland paid tribute to Ronnie Delany following his death at ninety-one. The Arklow-born runner won Ireland’s first Olympic track-and-field gold in Melbourne in 1956, using a late sprint to take the fifteen hundred metres in an Olympic record of 3:41.2.
Delany developed through Crusaders Athletic Club before studying at Villanova University in the United States. Under coach Jumbo Elliott, he became a leading collegiate middle-distance runner and collected multiple NCAA championship titles.
His international achievements also included European fifteen-hundred-metre bronze in 1958 and eight-hundred-metre gold at the 1961 Summer Universiade in Sofia. Persistent injuries ended his competitive career later that year at twenty-six, but he remained involved in Irish sport and supported younger generations of athletes.
