Italy and Canada win Olympic team pursuit finals
The Italian men beat the United States while Canada retained the women’s title.

Italy’s men and Canada’s women won the Olympic team pursuit finals in Milan. Davide Ghiotto, Michele Malfatti and Andrea Giovannini beat the United States in 3:39.20, finishing 4.51 seconds clear after taking the lead with two and a half laps remaining.
China narrowly beat the Netherlands for men’s bronze, securing its first Olympic long track team medal. Italy’s victory repeated its home success from Torino 2006 and followed a semi-final win over the Dutch team earlier in the day.
Canada’s Isabelle Weidemann, Valérie Maltais and Ivanie Blondin retained the title they won at Beijing by defeating the Netherlands. Japan beat the United States for women’s bronze. The Canadian trio described the defence as the culmination of eight years skating together.
