Gabre Gabric was selected for a posthumous honour through Italy’s national programme recognising significant women in local and national history. FIDAL announced that a Rome ceremony on 3 March would celebrate the discus thrower, who competed at the 1936 and 1948 Olympics.
Gabric finished sixth in Berlin and also reached two European Championship finals. Born in 1914, she lived to 101 and played an important role in the foundation of Atletica Brescia 1950, maintaining a lasting connection with the city.
Brescia’s municipality proposed her for the award. The federation also highlighted the sports centre named after her in Sanpolino, which hosted national club championship finals, linking her competitive achievements with a long legacy in Italian club athletics.
