Jílek wins Czechia’s first men’s long track Olympic gold
The nineteen-year-old won ten thousand metres ahead of Semirunniy and Bergsma.
Source publication date:
Metoděj Jílek won the Olympic men’s ten thousand metres in 12:33.43, delivering Czechia’s first men’s long track speed skating gold. Vladimir Semirunniy took silver in 12:39.08, and forty-year-old Jorrit Bergsma completed the podium behind the nineteen-year-old winner.
Semirunniy set a demanding early time after initially skating near world record pace. Jílek was the only competitor to beat it, maintaining his effort despite saying he had felt slightly unwell before the race. Sander Eitrem and Timothy Loubineaud could not challenge the winning mark in the last pair.
Bergsma added bronze to his ten-thousand-metre gold from Sochi and silver from PyeongChang. Canada’s Ted-Jan Bloemen placed ninth in the final race of his long skating career.
