Francesca Jones defeated Venus Williams 7–5, 7–5 in the Miami Open first round for her first career WTA 1000 victory. The world number ninety-three earned her seventeenth tour-level win and her first victory since January after a difficult start to the season.
Williams, forty-five, was making her twenty-second Miami appearance at a tournament she had won three times. Jones acknowledged the significance of playing a childhood idol, recalling visits to Wimbledon with her father and photographs of the Williams sisters at home.
Since the WTA 1000 category began in 2009, Jones became the first player to earn an initial match win at that level against a former world number one. She bowed at the net before the players embraced following their closely contested match.
