Jovic and Gibson remove Badosa and Osaka in Miami second round
The young players advanced to face each other after high-profile victories.
Source publication date:
Iva Jovic and Talia Gibson secured notable Miami Open second-round victories against former leading players. Eighteen-year-old Jovic defeated Paula Badosa 6–2, 6–1 in seventy-six minutes, earning her first main-draw win at the tournament and responding to a difficult Indian Wells defeat.
Australian qualifier Gibson beat Naomi Osaka 7–5, 6–4, reversing their first-round Wimbledon result from the previous year. After ten consecutive service holds, Gibson broke at 5–5 and then again at the start of the second set to take lasting control.
Gibson did not face another break point during her final five service games. Their wins set up a third-round meeting between the two emerging players, who had previously met at the Ilkley WTA 125, where Jovic won on her way to the title.
