Kim Yeon Koung was named the Asian recipient of the IOC Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champions Award. The recognition acknowledges initiatives beyond her playing career, including work to improve participation, athlete welfare and opportunities for girls and young women.
The former Korean national captain created the Kim Yeon Koung Foundation in 2024. Its programmes include scholarships, youth clinics, equipment provision and a national middle-school championship, addressing financial and structural barriers that can interrupt young players' development.
The foundation also supported Korea's under-sixteen women's team and mentoring for female athletes moving into coaching or other sports roles. Kim's sporting record includes three Olympic appearances and the most valuable player award at London 2012, where Korea finished fourth.
