Source publication date:
Germany defeated Italy 2–1 to finish second in Olympic women’s hockey group B behind Sweden. Laura Kluge scored the winner on a breakaway with 1:29 remaining, completing a close game in which both teams remained competitive through the third period.
Emily Nix scored Germany’s other goal and Justine Reyes replied for the hosts. Kluge also supplied an assist, reaching seven tournament points and three goals. Her late forehand finish ensured that Germany gained the regulation victory and the higher group placing.
Both teams had secured progression towards quarter-finals against North American opposition. Italy had exceeded early expectations with wins over France and Japan, but captain Nadia Mattivi described the narrow loss as difficult to accept after the team had continued believing it could win until the closing stages.
