Knight and Bates selected as American closing flag bearers
Fellow athletes voted for the five-time Olympians to lead Team USA in Verona.
Source publication date:
Hilary Knight and Evan Bates were selected as the United States’ closing ceremony flag bearers for Milano Cortina. Fellow Team USA athletes voted through a process led by the athletes’ commission, choosing the two five-time Olympians to lead the delegation into Verona Olympic Arena.
The selection created the first shared winter closing flag role for an American duo. Knight had won women’s ice hockey gold and become the country’s leading Olympic scorer in that competition, while Bates earned figure skating team gold and ice dance silver with Madison Chock.
The USOPC recognised their long careers and contribution to the Olympic team. Bates became the first American figure skater chosen for an Olympic ceremony flag role since Scott Hamilton’s opening ceremony appearance in 1980.
