Late own goal gives Villa victory on Milner’s milestone night
Brighton’s midfielder equalled the Premier League appearance record at Villa Park.
Source publication date:
Aston Villa beat Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 through a late Jack Hinshelwood own goal at Villa Park. The result strengthened Villa’s position in third place, while Brighton were left with only one victory from their previous thirteen league matches.
James Milner entered as a first-half substitute for his 653rd Premier League appearance, matching Gareth Barry’s record. Brighton threatened after the interval, with Emiliano Martinez tipping Ferdi Kadioglu’s long-range effort against the crossbar and also stopping an attempt from Milner.
The decisive moment arrived in the 86th minute when Tyrone Mings challenged for Leon Bailey’s corner and the ball went in off Hinshelwood. Villa moved five points clear of fourth-placed Manchester United.
