Latvia upset Germany in Olympic men’s hockey
Dans Locmelis scored twice while Arturs Silovs protected the narrow advantage.
Source publication date:
Latvia defeated Germany 4–3 in Olympic men’s hockey group C, earning a significant win against a team with several established NHL players. Dans Locmelis scored twice and goalkeeper Arturs Silovs made twenty-six saves as Latvia overcame two separate German leads.
Locmelis converted two power-play opportunities, including a two-man advantage, before Eduards Tralmaks and Renars Krastenbergs established a two-goal cushion in the third period. Germany replied through Tim Stutzle after pulling its goalkeeper and continued pressing for an equaliser.
Lukas Reichel hit the post with less than a minute remaining, but Latvia held on. Locmelis emphasised the team effort and shot blocking rather than his personal points, while Germany’s players identified difficulty entering the attacking zone and missed scoring opportunities as important factors.
